The finale of the second season of series created by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni has surprised the fans who have met two old and loved characters of the Star Wars Franchise.
In this article, we talk about the Chapter 16 of the story of Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter played by Pedro Pascal. If you haven’t watched the episode, do not keep reading or else may the Force be with you.
THE RESCUE
This is the title of the last episode of the second season of The Mandalorian, it is everything Star Wars is, and the sequel trilogy wasn’t. The plot is intuitable, the title refers to the rescue of the child Grogu from Moff Gideon and not only this.
A STAR GIRL POWER
In the episode, the team formed by Mando, Cara Dune, Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, the two mandalorians Bo-Katan and Koska kidnaps Doctor Perchin and impounds his ship. With that they can come aboard Moff Gideon’s star cruiser, simulating an attack to the impounded ship.
Boba Fett, pretending to be responsible for the attack of the impounded ship, drag the Tie Fighters attenzion. Meanwhile Mando and the others board enter the ship.
Cara Dune and the other warriors take action in a mission of all women, a star girl power, to pave the way for Mando. Their task is to reach the bridge and conquer the ship. In particular, Bo-Katan wants Moff Gideon to take from him the Darksaber.
The bounty hunter, taking advantage of the distraction created by Dune and the others, head to the room where Grogu is imprisoned. There he meet Gideon who was waiting for him.
While Bo-Katan and the other warriors reach the bridge, Mando and Gideon start fighting. The bounty hunter shows all his ability with the pure beskar spear and defeat Gideon.
Din arrives at the bridge with Gideon handcuffed, the child in a hand and the Darksaber in the other. Everything could end here but no, here we go again.
THE DARKSABER LIKE THE ELDER WAND
The Mandalorian arrival is not taken well from Bo-Katan who refuse to take the Darksaber when Din hands it to her. Gideon explains that the saber is a symbol of command and it can be gripped only if the owner is defeated in a fight (just like the Elder Wand in Harry Potter).
Bo-Katan should have defeated the imperial commander but things has gone differently.
The Dark troopers that Mando has ejected before, has come back. Neither of them can defeat them and when it seems there is no hope anymore, an X-Wing flies near the cruiser and land in the hangar. Here the heart lose a beat.
THE RETURN OF THE JEDI
From the just landed ship, a Jedi comes out with the face covered and start to head to the bridge where the team is locked. If the heart before has lost a beat for the X-Wing, then it lose another one for the green lightsaber and another one for the robotic gloved hand.
None other than Luke Skywalker faces all of the Dark Trooper in a sequence very similar to Darth Varder’s in Rogue One: A Star wars Story. He defeats all the troopers one by one, under the surprise gaze of Mando and the others who are watching through the security cameras. Here the heart is pounding furiously in the chest.
JUST FOR ONCE LET ME LOOK ON YOU WITH MY OWN EYES
Mando lets Luke enter the bridge , the Jedi is here to take Grogu as his apprentice and he is not alone, R2-D2 is with him.
It’s time to say goodbye, the heart that before was pounding in excitement now breaks because Mando and the Child have to say goodbye to each other.
The bounty hunters takes the child who silently ask him to remove his helmet and let him see his real face for once, for the last time.
The link to the scene of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in Epidode 6 The Return of the Jedi is almost immediate. Vader asks to his son to help him to remove his mask to see him with his own eyes.
In Chapter 16, the role are inverted. The child asks his father to let him see his face without the mask. The scene is impactful because it involves sacrifices, both the Sith Lord and the Mandalorian are sacrificing themselves, even if in different ways.
Din Djarin removes his helmet, breaking the creed that has defined him from when he was a child, because the child has become his only priority. He has told it to Bo-Katan when he asked for her help. The man is in tears like the public.
Luke takes Grogu and leaves, Din look at his kid with watering eyes be taken away. He has promised him that they will meet again.
THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS SERIES
Chapter 16 of The Mandalorian is an episode with growing rhythm, 40 minutes of strong emotions. It is a dynamic episode with a Marvel Style finale, very appreciated by the fans.
There is more Star Wars in this episode and generally in all the series than in the Sequel Trilogy.
Faverau and Filoni have created a very engaging series, so engaging to make the fans feel guilty when they have seen Mando’face in Chapter 15 when he was forced to remove his helmet to get the coordinates for finding the child.
Pedro Pascal has given life to a great characters, able to communicate emotions even keeping his face hidden, readable through his body language, an aspect that reminds the character of V in V for Vendetta, and above all coherent with and without the helmet.
Again, we remind the Chapter 15 where Pascal has shown perfectly what means for a man who has worn an armor for his entire life, be suddenly without it and feel uncomfortable and vulnerable. It is to mention also the stuntmen and the director for such amazing characterization.
In the same way, Giancarlo Esposito has given life to a charismatic villain with Moff Gideon, showing again his talent for the role of bad people (see The Boys and Breaking bad).
The same is for the other characters like Cara Dune played by Gina Carano, Greef Karga by Carl Weathers, Migs Mayfield by Bill Burr.
In conclusion, The Mandalorian can combine new through a story never told before with new characters with old with known and loved characters like Boba Fett, Bo-Katan, Ahsoka Tano e Luke Skywalker.
The series has been renewed for a third season and fans already can’t wait for it.
